foundations of horse anatomy

From studying parts to the horse's whole, from short gestural exercises to longer formal drawings, Jill shares the essential tools to understand this beautiful animal.

Sketch, sculpt, and paint from live models. Drawing the skeleton of a horse on a horse is one of the most effective ways to understand the underlying framework of a horse.

Study the movement and gaits of a horse.

Sitting on horses helps us understand their structure and movement, too!

Fully hosted by cooks and attentive staff, be prepared to feel spoiled and gain a few pounds—the gourmet meals are AMAZING (and completely worth the weight!).

The lodge is the original ranch homestead built in the 1800s. Once the ranch's main house, this log structure has been beautifully remodeled to incorporate a roomy and attractive indoor dining area. All rooms are in top order and beautifully decorated along with large, comfortable beds and private bathrooms.

Photo opportunities include the wranglers bringing the horses in, searching for bison, and the beautiful surroundings.

Thank you Ranchlands, Sue Johnson, & Julie Nestor for the use of your photos.

overview

This is an intimate, all-inclusive horse anatomy course at the stunning Zapata Ranch. Artistic exercises will focus on drawing, painting, and sculpting from live horses; drawing on live horses; and comprehensive studies on skeletal/muscle structures and movement. Join me for a week full of demonstrations, presentations, critiques, riding time, and photo opportunities.

Not only is this an artistic adventure, but students get a taste of ranch life and enjoy time with the people and animals that make Zapata special. All participants stay at the same location, sharing meals and evening activities and getting to know each other on a personal level.

Classes are kept small to allow for ample one-on-one time with the instructor. Space is limited 16 people.

All levels are welcome.

For an additional fee, students are invited to bring a spouse or friend (non-student). While you’re involved in the workshop, your spouse or friend can enjoy ranch activities.

Cost: $3,420, includes all meals, lodging, and instruction
